Birmingham Dominates Phoenix
Career Win No. 14 Launches No. 88 Ford Into Title Contention
Bryan Birmingham delivered the most commanding performance of the 2026 season Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, scoring a massive 257 Race Points to win the Straight Talk Wireless 500 and capture his 14th career Victory Lane Racing Cup Series victory. The No. 88 Ford Credit entry narrowly edged Cody Zeeb by one point to take the full 65 league points in Race #796, marking Ford’s second manufacturer win of the season.
The Phoenix event produced one of the tightest battles of the year at the top. Four drivers finished within a single point of second place, showcasing just how thin the margins were at the one-mile desert oval. While Birmingham claimed the trophy, the championship fight continues to hinge on week-to-week consistency.
Top Five – Straight Talk Wireless 500 (Race 796)
Bryan Birmingham – 257 Race Points (Ford)
Cody Zeeb – 256 (Toyota)
Dave Smith – 256 (Chevrolet)
Andrew Thornton – 256 (Chevrolet)
Rob Kuczmarski – 252 (Chevrolet)
Just five Race Points separated the entire top five, and only one point separated second through fourth. Zeeb’s runner-up result was his strongest performance of the season, while Smith and Thornton delivered major rebounds with podium finishes.
Biggest Mover
Bryan Birmingham (+15) The Phoenix victory produced the largest climb of the week, launching Birmingham from outside the top ten all the way to third in the championship standings. It instantly turns the No. 88 team into a serious title contender.
Biggest Loser
Ray Perrotta (-17) Perrotta’s 51st-place finish dropped him sharply down the standings, representing the largest fall of the week. With the field tightly packed around the playoff cut line, a single rough race can dramatically change the championship outlook.
Championship Picture
After Four Races Despite Birmingham’s breakthrough, Ron Blackman remains the championship leader with 157 points after finishing sixth at Phoenix. His consistent early-season performance continues to set the benchmark.
Daytona 500 winner Rob Kuczmarski holds second with 151 points, while Birmingham’s victory vaults him into third at 139. Britten Steinfels (131) and Lisa Taylor (126) round out the top five in the standings.
Meanwhile, the Chase cut line continues to tighten. Cody Zeeb now occupies the 16th and final playoff position at 104 points, tied with Kevin Sullivan but holding the tiebreaker. With only four races complete, the battle around that line is already becoming one of the most competitive storylines of the season.
Four races into 2026, the series has produced four different winners and three different manufacturers in Victory Lane — a clear signal that this championship race could remain unpredictable deep into the schedule.
Next Up
The series stays out west at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Pennzoil 400, the first traditional 1.5-mile intermediate track of the season. After a superspeedway, road course, and short track to start the year, Las Vegas will provide the first true test of long-run speed and roster balance.
With the championship still tightly packed and momentum beginning to shift, the Nevada desert could reveal which contenders are ready to separate from the field — and which ones are still searching for consistency.
