TNP Week 6 Recap
Worcester and Lansing Rise, Jamestown Shocks the League, and the South Gets Weird
Six weeks into the season, the standings are starting to tell two completely different stories.
One story is about wins.
The other is about runs.
And in several divisions, those stories don't match at all.
The biggest headline of Week 6 belonged to the Jamestown Jammers. After opening the season 0-3 and undergoing a management change, Norah Riney's club exploded for 43 runs, the second-highest weekly score posted by any team this season. The performance vaulted Jamestown all the way to fifth place in the Atlantic despite sitting at just 2-4. In fact, the Jammers now have more total runs than division leader Vermont.
Speaking of division leaders, the Atlantic experienced a major shakeup. The Worcester Red Sox reclaimed first place after improving to 5-1, while the previously undefeated Vermont Lake Monsters finally suffered their first loss of the season. Worcester and Vermont now sit tied atop the division with identical records, but Worcester holds the edge thanks to a three-game winning streak and league-best consistency over the past month.
Over in the Great Lakes, the Lansing Lugnuts have quietly become one of the best teams in TNP. Curt Manning's club improved to 5-1 and now shares the overall lead in the National Conference with Worcester at 163.5 runs. Meanwhile, the division has become a graveyard for early contenders. Erie has lost three straight, Kane County has dropped three consecutive weeks, and Lehigh Valley has fallen into a four-way tie at 2-4 despite remaining among the league leaders in total runs.
Nowhere is the disconnect between wins and scoring more obvious than the South Division.
The South Bend Cubs lead the division at 4-2 despite ranking only fifth among division teams in total runs. Meanwhile, the Gwinnett Stripers remain the highest-scoring team in the entire league at 177.5 runs but find themselves sitting at just 3-3 after a second consecutive loss. Bowling Green, Jacksonville, Carolina, and Durham are all within a game of first place, making the South the most unpredictable division in the league.
The Frontier Division may be producing the hottest team nobody is talking about. The Santa Fe Fuego have won three straight and now sit atop the division at 4-2. Right behind them are the Quad City River Bandits, also riding a three-game winning streak. Meanwhile, Omaha has gone from division leader to fourth place after four consecutive losses.
As we reach the midpoint of the regular season in Week 7, the playoff picture is becoming clearer, but far from settled. Several teams with losing records are among the league leaders in scoring, while some division leaders continue winning despite middling point totals. The confidence format is doing exactly what it was designed to do: creating chaos.
And with eight weeks still to play, nobody is safe.
